FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — John Daly arrived at the 10th hole on Bethpage State Park’s Black Course behind the wheel of Club Cart No. 107 just before 1 p.m. on Thursday.
He had a large McDonald’s cup in the holder, four Diet Coke cans beneath the dashboard and his right hand on a steering wheel that was covered with a blue handicap sign. A roar of applause from the crowded gallery welcomed the golfer. He extended his left hand to greet all who called his name with fist bumps.
“Break it out of neutral!” one fan said.
“Do a doughnut!” another shouted.
Daly, 53, demurred. Granted a waiver to be the second golfer ever to use a cart to get around at a major championship, because of arthritis, he displayed unusual restraint during the P.G.A. Championship’s opening round. It was not until he reached the fairway on his third hole that he lit his first cigarette. He took drags between shots as he bogeyed four of his first nine holes. He finished five over on the afternoon, 12 shots off the lead and tied for 112th place out of 155 golfers.
“The guy’s amazing,” said Steven Fedoris, who wore a black T-shirt emblazoned with the image of Daly smoking a cigarette and “Rip it and Sip it” across the front. “If anybody’s allowed to ride in the cart, it should be him.”
It was a return to relevance for Daly, who reprised his role as the people’s champion on the public course that bills itself as “The People’s Country Club.”
Ranked No. 1,848 in the world, he was eligible to play the event because he won the 1991 P.G.A. Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club. Before that tournament, he was the ninth alternate. He went on to win the British Open in 1995 but has not won a tour event since the Buick Open in 2004, as his partying took its toll. Daly’s past is also checkered with domestic violence and substance abuse issues. Since 2016, he has played on the P.G.A. Tour Champions circuit, which is for players 50 and older and allows carts.
“It’s not far from the senior tour,” Daly said of the rules that he played under Thursday. “Just a couple of stipulations.”
Daly applied to the P.G.A. of America for a cart under the Americans With Disabilities Act. He noted that he recently had the meniscus removed from his right knee, and he moved with a noticeable limp throughout Thursday’s round. While he was fine walking uphill, he struggled going down. To make it through the 7,459-yard course, where carts are typically banned, he steered his way along the sides of the course as his caddie, Peter Van Der Riet, walked the entire time and carried his bag. The crowd feted Daly from start to finish Thursday as he wore a pair of shades and pinstripe pants dotted with a variety of New York Yankees logos.
Daly’s waiver did not come without controversy. Previously, Casey Martin, who has a degenerative condition in his right leg, had been the only player to use a cart during a major. Martin was born with a circulatory disorder, and doctors advised him against walking golf courses. He appealed the PGA Tour’s policy that professionals not use carts; after legal battles, Martin was permitted to compete in two United States Opens while riding a cart. He finished tied for 23rd in 1998 and missed the cut in 2012. Both of those U.S. Opens were held at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
When asked during a news conference Tuesday about the decision to allow Daly to use a cart, Tiger Woods said, “As far as J.D. taking a cart, well, I walked with a broken leg, so.”
Woods won the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines with a stress fracture in his left tibia and a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Two days after his victory, Woods announced that he would have reconstructive A.C.L. surgery. He did not play again until the W.G.C.-Match Play Championship in February 2009.
Daly played a clean second half of his round until he bogeyed the seventh hole.
“It just sucks,” Daly said of his need for a cart. “It just hurts.”
Afterward, as he tried to put his day in perspective, Daly expressed frustration with his putting game. He lit one more Marlboro Red and pulled his pant leg up to show his swollen knee, which he compared to a softball in size before letting out a sigh.
“The greens will be fresh tomorrow,” he said. “Fight the battle, baby.”B:
